4-H
Gets
Academic Home in ISU College of Human Sciences
Posted 8 July
2010
4-H Youth Development
always has had a physical home on the Iowa State University campus. Now
ISU Extension’s youth program has an academic home as well.
With the arrival in May of Nancy Franz as the new associate dean for
ISU Extension and Outreach for Families and 4-H Youth, ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development
has formally joined the College of Human Sciences. Franz will serve 4-H
as an academic matchmaker, originating partnerships with people and
programs within the college as well as across the Iowa State campus.
Chuck Morris will continue to direct day-to-day operations for the 4-H
program, which reaches one in five Iowa youth with leadership,
citizenship, communication and life skills development.
With 4-H formally part of the College of Human Sciences, the youth
program has increased access to research, program evaluation and
outcome assessment – opening channels to better document both the
quality of 4-H programs and the impact 4-H activities have on youth and
communities, Franz said.
“Having 4-H be part of the college connects 4-H staff and volunteers
more directly to Iowa State’s research base. Iowa State students,
faculty and staff are potential collaborators who can help develop the
educational resources that are key to 4-H hands-on learning
experiences,” Franz said.
With more than 109,500 youth involved in 4-H clubs, special interest
groups, school enrichment and other 4-H programs in the past year, Iowa
4-H is a living social science laboratory for demonstrating how
community education works, she said.
“4-H also connects ISU students and alumni to volunteer and career
opportunities. And Iowa 4-H’ers are potential Iowa State students,”
Franz added.
