IDPH Issues Annual Disease Report
Posted 13 July 2010
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has issued the 2009 Iowa Surveillance of Notifiable and Other Diseases Report. The annual report provides a yearly snapshot of what, how, and when events impact the public’s health.

In 2009, more than 53,000 reports of infectious disease were submitted to IDPH disease surveillance programs. IDPH also investigates conditions related to lead, occupational, and environmental hazards like carbon monoxide.

"There were many public health challenges in 2009,” said IDPH Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. "The most widespread event was pandemic flu, with the first wave in early May, followed by a second wave in October and November. Surveillance data compiled by IDPH and its partners were critical to decisions made on how to best respond to H1N1."

Other significant elements of the 2009 report include cases of Lyme disease topping 100 for the third consecutive year; the continued increase in chlamydial infections, which have been rising for the past 30 years; and a 19 percent increase over last year in diagnosed HIV cases.
