Iowa Health Department Receives $4 Million for Preparedness
Posted 15 July 2010
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has been awarded $4,039,814 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to enhance hospital and community response to health emergencies. The grant is part of $390.5 million awarded to states, territories and large metropolitan as part of the HHS Hospital Preparedness Program.

“Communication is critical to successful emergency response,” said IDPH Center for Disaster Operations and Response (CDOR) Chief Rebecca Curtiss. “This grant will help improve communication systems, plan for hospital evacuations or sheltering operations, and enhance tracking of hospital beds and volunteer health professionals.” In addition, the funding will be used to strengthen community partnerships through participation in exercises and drills to test emergency plans.

The funds will be administered by IDPH and allocated to 118 Iowa hospitals, the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa and the Iowa Poison Control Center.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response has provided the funds through the Hospital Preparedness Program. These grant funds are utilized to enhance community resilience by increasing the ability of hospitals and healthcare facilities to respond to the public health and medical impacts of any emergency, such as natural disasters, disease outbreaks, or acts of terrorism.
