AP-DNH Presentation of Art
Posted 11 September 2008
If you are a football fan in the Cedar Valley, you know of the rivalry between the communities of Dike-New Hartford and Aplington-Parkersburg.  Both teams have always been strong, talented and fight till the end to say they have beat the other this year.  At the same time, both districts had extenuating circumstances this year.  On May 25, an EF5 tore apart the AP High School and continued through to New Hartford creating havoc just north of town.  House after house was destroyed.  Then a few weeks later, floods overtook New Hartford.  People, who had moved to town after losing everything in the tornado, lost more in the floods.   Despite the riverlry both communities stepped up to help their neighbor.

Before the big opening game between these two teams for the 2008 football season, there was a special presentation.  Art student from each district created a piece of work for the other district and presented it to the superintendents, Lindsey Beecher (DNH) and John Thompson(AP).
The piece from AP shows a tree stripped of its branches and leaves tornado debris wrapped around it, with its base surrounded by flood water.   In the background is a tattered Iowa license plate that simply says IOWA HOPE and the New Hartford water tower.

The piece from DNH is a close up of the AP High School with letters missing, windows broken and debris stacked up in front of it.  There is a Falcon holding a banner saying “Onward, Upward, Forward” the rally cry of the district after the tornado for the rebuilding process.
Both pieces with be on displayed in their respective schools.
