Iowa Healthy Kids Challenge Underway
Posted 26 January 2010
A report released this week by the Kaiser Family Foundation concludes the amount of time American children and teens spend watching television, playing video games or surfing the Internet, also known as screen time, has increased dramatically over the past five years. The amount of screen time the average 8 to 18 year-old spends with media is up by 1 hour, 17 minutes a day to almost eight hours a day. Many studies, including a 2007 report by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) Iowans Fit for Life program found that children who reported less than two hours of screen time each day had a normal body mass index (BMI), a measure of overweight/obesity. The more screen time, the more likely the children were to be overweight or obese.

In an effort to establish healthy lifestyle behaviors, the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Nutrition has teamed up with the Iowa Sports Foundation to develop the 2010 Live Healthy Iowa Kids/Governor’s Challenge, a free 100 Day Challenge for youth. During the 100 day challenge, teams comprised of one adult captain with 5 to 30 youth will track their physical activity; screen time (including television, video games, and computer time); and fruit, vegetable, low-fat milk and water intake. The last week of the challenge coincides with Turn Off the TV week (April 19 - 25). Supporting classroom activities will be available to educators. Teams that average 4,200 minutes or more of physical activity and report their nutritional intake during the 100 Day Challenge will be eligible for cash prizes up to $1,000 to further their wellness efforts.

“Last year, more than 9,500 youth signed up for the Challenge,” said IDPH Iowans Fit for Life program coordinator Dennis Haney. “The teams logged over 32 million minutes of activity. Our hope is that committing to increased physical activity and nutrition for just 100 days will lead to a lifetime of better health.” Since the 100 Day Challenge began in 2004, $17,500 has been awarded from the Iowa Sports Foundation to teams and schools for physical education, wellness programs, and playground equipment.

The 2010 Live Healthy Iowa Kids Governor’s Challenge began January 19 and runs through April 28, 2010. For more information, visit here.
